The Village of Dogs Who Knew Everything

Once upon a time, there was a small village where dogs knew everything.

Not in the sense that they understood many things.
In the sense that they knew exactly everything that needed to be known.

They knew when someone was about to leave the house, even before they picked up their keys.

They knew when it was time to eat, even if the clock said otherwise.
They knew when one of their human friends was feeling sad, even if they tried to hide it.

Let’s take an example.

The dog from the first house would sit by the door at exactly 6:02 p.m.

Not at 6:00, not at 6:05.

At 6:02.

And at 6:03, right on time, his human dad would come home.

Here’s another example.

The dog from the seventeenth house would slowly walk over to the couch every time his human mom sat down with a slightly longer sigh than usual.

He didn’t bark, he didn’t jump.
He simply leaned against her.

And that was enough.

In that village, dogs never got it wrong.

Their human friends, on the other hand, did.

They got the timing wrong, they got their words wrong, and sometimes they even got wrong what truly mattered.

So, after a while, something unusual happened.

Human moms and dads began asking their dogs for advice.

“Should we go out?”

“Is this the right moment?”

“Is it better to stay here or go over there?”

The dogs didn’t answer.

They did something much simpler.

They moved.

And their human friends, little by little, learned to follow them.
