The Tail That Kept the Beat

Once upon a time there was a dog named Tito.

He wasn’t big, and he wasn’t small.

He was just the right size to move among things without making noise.

He was a honey-colored mixed breed, with ears a little too big and the kind of eyes that always seem to know something more.

When people asked what breed he was, the family would simply answer:

“Love breed.”

But he had a special talent.

When he was happy, his tail didn’t just wag.

It kept rhythm.

Tap tap tap on the couch.

Thump thump thump against the cabinet.

Ffff on the rug.

At first, no one paid attention.

“He’s just a happy dog,” they said.

But one afternoon, with a light breeze — the kind that makes the curtains move slowly — the little girl in the house stopped to listen.

Tito was sitting by the window.

He was looking outside.

His tail was gently tapping on the floor.

Tap… tap… tap…

It wasn’t random.

It was precise.

The girl picked up a pencil.

She began tapping on the table, following that rhythm.

Tap tap tap.

Tap tap tap.

And something tiny and enormous happened at the same time:

the wind seemed to enter the room in the same tempo.

The leaves outside went ffff… ffff…

The refrigerator hummed hmmm… hmmm…

Even the clock sounded less strict.

Tito wasn’t just wagging his tail.

He was keeping the time of the afternoon.

From that day on, whenever the house felt a little crooked — too many thoughts, too many words, too much hurry — the girl didn’t say anything.

She would sit next to Tito.

And wait.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

And the tail would begin again.

It wasn’t radio music.

It wasn’t concert music.

It was home music.

The kind you don’t hear only with your ears, but with your chest.

And that’s how they discovered something important:

not all conductors hold a baton.

Some have four paws.

And a tail that knows exactly when it’s time to slow down.
